Description

Fen is a 12 month old small German Shepherd bitch who requires her PERFECT home. Fen will not be going anywhere that is not right for her.

Fen joined us here at Greyhound Gap in January this year after we were asked by another rescue if we could assist with a young GSD who urgently needed to find a more suitable home. Sadly Fen's owners health was declining and with 2 young children Fen was not getting her needs met. She had not been walked on lead, nor off lead, had not had the chance to meet new people and had not been socialised with dogs only the one she lived with a 3 year old female collie. We agreed immediately to help and bought Fen to the kennels and into the house. We had hoped that Fen would happily integrate with our pack and had that been possible Fen would have become a permanent member of our family. Sadly Fen has made it very clear that a large pack environment is way to stressful for her and we do not want any long term impact on her behaviour as she is coming along so nicely and learning to be the most wonderful dog.

Fen was originally purchased from a farm and is very clearly working line shepherd. She is intelligent has a huge working and prey drive and is the most biddable girl willing to learn. One on one or with my own male shepherd she is perfect, even still at times she pushes her luck with him but he handles her beautifully. Fens main problem here with us is the sighthounds. Their fast movement and competitive nature quickly and strongly prompts her herding drive but coming back from being a nervous under socialised girl she does not necessarily handle it well and ends up getting herself a telling off and this does not always prompt the best reaction from her. Upon landing Fen was terrified of everything, strangers, other dogs out and about a real worried little girl. When gently asked to do anything she would quickly submit and urinate herself. Now with soft and gentle reassurance along with boundaries and reward based training this fear is passing. We rarely get her drop to the floor now.

She is fabulously sociable with calm dogs who engage her in the right manner and really does love to play with larger docile males. With females she will happily take a telling off if they are relatively new to her but sadly as she gains confidence and meets them more and more she is less willing to back down. She is a strong willed girl who we feel needs a GSD experienced home either with an older calmer male shepherd or large breed dog or as an only dog. Fen wants to learn, she wants to please and she needs a job. Agility or obedience based homes would be excellent for her, she would excell and her concentration and loyalty and desire to please is second to non. She is a typically female shepherd in that her family is everything to her. With strangers now Fen has massively improved, she is getting plenty of stimulation here at the kennels and meets new people everyday. She is still a little shy at first but soon warms up and loves fuss and attention. Fen is now in the main lead trained but still needs a little more work, she is perfect when out on her own but again when out with my male shepherd does tend to pull a little. Fen would also be happily homed as an only dog at the center of a family unit where she gets to take part in the general routine and day to day activities. She would also suit a semi retired couple with shepherd experience looking for an only dog.

Fen is house trained, crate trained and is happy to spend a few hours in a room on her own now if necessary during the day. We had to crate train her because there isnt a door in the world that she can not open if she turns her mind to it. Off lead without distractions Fen is a dream, she is also extremely food motivated. That said her manners around human food are now improving we could see when first landing that she was use to the children in her previous home feeding her and would nudge under your arm when eating and attempt also to counter surf, this has now all stopped. We did worry when Fen landed nervous, over sensitive and under socialised that as is the case with some shepherds she may stay that way. However although she still is sometimes a worried little girl thankfully the level of socialisation oppurtunities she has received here at kennels has helped her massively. The problem is now as her confidence has arisen she has been strong enough to show me that a large pack is mind blowing and for that reason and that reason only we have to do what is *right for her* not for us as much as we love her. Fen loves children and the children she was with in her last home were 1 and 3. She is typically GSD in her nature around her family. Fen also travels like a dream. All in all now she is learning to be the most wonderful dog and needs to find a suitable home now to take her on the rest of that journey in an environment she can *relax*.

Fen is vaccinated, kc vaccinated, de flead, de wormed, spayed and microchipped. For more information or to offer Fen a home please use the pre adoption questionnaire below. Fen is currently located in Stoke on Trent and can be rehomed nationally subject to a successful homevisit being carried out and all members of the immediate family being willing to travel to meet with her
